Zillions of Pompoms

Ah, pompom
how glorious you are
I succumb to your roundness
have not you is such a badness
I adore you, how bizarre!

I’ve not gone mental. I received five diabolical machines to make pom-poms as a birthday present. And I say “diabolical” because now there are pompoms everywhere around the house.  Big, small, any color, I love them.

Multipurpose, you can use them as appliqués for hats and scarves, as deco elements at home, at the office, keychains, carpets, flowers, fluffy toys, pendants, anything that you can think of.

How to make pompons:

- The old fashion way:
  • By hand, here.
  • With a cardboard guide, here.
  • With a fork for tiny pompoms, here.

- The “diabolical machine”: the ones that you can see in the picture are from Clover. I have to say that they aren’t cheap but If you are lucky as me and someone’s read your birthday/ Christmas wish-list…They are really easy to use and you can make a pompom in a sec (unless you are all thumbs like me when using mechanical artifacts; if so, click here).

Differences between methods: machine-made are really fast and easy to make, more uniform (probably puffier than the handmade ones) and the haircut is minimal. On the other hand, handmade pompoms are cheaper as you only need your hands and/or a cardboard guide/fork, yarn and scissors and they look more scraggly and, well… “handmade”.

A little advise: if you are planning to sew or attach your pompom to an item do not cut the yarn that you’ve used to knot it, just use one or both strands to do it. And as haircutting the pompom is fairly messy, put something underneath it like a tray, a plastic bag, a sheet of paper so that you can clean all the mess in no time at all.

That’s all for today! See you next friday!
